Funeral Mass Music

Many people do not know that the Catholic Funeral Mass already has an abundance of music with sacred texts and fitting intercessions for the deceased.

Please take some time to read and meditate on these texts as they bring comfort to families and friends. All of this music is sung at every funeral offered at the Cathedral.

The “Entrance Chant” is sung at the beginning of Mass.

“Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.
A hymn becomes you, O God, in Zion, and to you shall a vow be repaid in Jerusalem.
Hear my prayer; to you shall all flesh come.
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.”

The Responsorial Psalm is sung:
The LORD is my shepherd; there is nothing I lack. In green pastures he makes me lie down;
to still waters he leads me; He restores my soul.
He guides me along right paths for the sake of his name.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil, for you are with me;
your rod and your staff comfort me.
You set a table before me in front of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Indeed, goodness and mercy will pursue me all the days of my life;
I will dwell in the house of the LORD for endless days.

During the Offertory the appointed chant is sung:
“Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory,
free the souls of all the faithful departed
from punishment and the deep pit.
Free them from the mouth of the lion;
but may the standard-bearer Saint Michael,
lead them into the holy light
which you once promised to Abraham and his seed.”

“O Lord, we offer You
sacrifices and prayers of praise;
accept them on behalf of those souls
whom we remember today.
Let them, O Lord, pass over from death to life,
as you once promised to Abraham and his seed.”

The Ordinary of the Mass is also sung:

“Holy, Holy, Holy,
Lord God of Hosts;
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.”

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.”

“Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, grant them rest,
Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, grant them rest,
Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, grant them eternal rest.”

During Holy Communion the Lux Aaterna is sung:

“May everlasting light shine upon them, O Lord,
with your Saints forever,
for you are kind.
Grant them eternal rest, O Lord,
and may everlasting light shine upon them;
with your Saints forever,
for you are merciful.”

During the Final Commendation the In Paradisum is sung:
“May the angels lead you into paradise;
may the martyrs receive you at your arrival
and lead you to the holy city Jerusalem.
May choirs of angels receive you
and with Lazarus, once a poor man, may you have eternal rest.”

NOTE: Should the family choose to include songs in addition to the music listed here, please refer to the list at the bottom and SELECT UP TO 2 HYMNS. The hymns included in the list meet the criteria of reverence, beauty and solemn character of the Catholic Funeral Mass.  Depending upon what takes place in the liturgy, one or possilby two of the hymns may be sung.
